Half a century after the accomplishments of Ornette Coleman and John Coltrane, a not entirely new question is asked perhaps somewhat more loudly: What can be done to prevent free music-making from appearing outdated, 50 years after "Free Jazz" and "Ascension"?
The answer that Michael Jaeger, Fabian Gisler and Tom Rainey provide is quite tangible, but has a philosophical dimension at the same time. From Zurich, Basel and New York respectively, they have opted for an extreme concentration of resources: bass, drums and either tenor saxophone or clarinet. The frequently used word "transparency" could be brought in here, but would hardly capture the essence in this context. It is more a case of the momentum of silence, of the pause, of what is not played, serving as the force from which their improvisations emerge.
When free play draws on the sparks of now, it makes sense, more than anywhere else, to capture a live situation, as has happened here. "A Pyramid Made Of Music", the title of this recording from the Zurich festival Unerhört! in 2012, uses the image of the apex of a pyramid to describe where the trio's music manifests itself. A point that can in fact only exist because the edges and the entire content of the corpus lead towards it. What is ultimately heard from this tiny point, this apex, is an explosion of what resides beneath it: of the inspired moment, the biographies, the societal preconditions and (quite essentially) the interaction with the audience.
The tenor saxophonist and clarinettist Michael Jaeger of Zurich professes that he absorbed the fascination of improvisation already as a youth, via Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. Bassist Fabian Gisler constantly explores new spaces on his bass, for instance in the unorthodox formation Rusconi. Finally, Tom Rainey is at home at the origin of free-jazz thinking, in New York, where he has spent four decades working with creative minds from very different camps, such as Kenny Werner, Tim Berne and Fred Hersch. Thus, these three musicians quite naturally also combine the geographies of free jazz, which stood as separate blocks when its story began. As these three play, free tonal language is revitalised in an exhilarating manner – as an inwardness of scintillations.

Ein halbes Jahrhundert nach den Errungenschaften Ornette Colemans und John Coltranes stellt sich die nicht ganz neue Frage vielleicht noch etwas lauter: Wo lässt sich, 50 Jahre nach "Free Jazz" und "Ascension" ansetzen, um freies Musizieren nicht outdated erscheinen zu lassen?
Die Antwort, die Michael Jaeger, Fabian Gisler und Tom Rainey geben, ist ganz konkret, hat zugleich aber eine philosophische Dimension. Der Zürcher, der Basler und der New Yorker haben sich für eine äußerste Konzentration der Mittel entschieden: Tenorsaxophon oder wahlweise Klarinette, Bass und Schlagzeug. Man könnte da das vielbemühte Wort "Transparenz" ins Feld führen, doch rührt es in diesem Kontext kaum ans Wesentliche. Es ist vielmehr das Momentum der Stille, der Pause, des Nicht-Gespielten als diejenige Kraft, aus der sich ihre Improvisationen herausschälen.
Wenn das freie Spiel aus dem Funken des Jetzt schöpft, ergibt es mehr als irgendwo anders Sinn, eine Livesitutation einzufangen wie hier geschehen. "A Pyramid Made Of Music" - im Titel zum vorliegenden Mitschnitt vom Unerhört-Festival Zürich 2012 wird das Bild von der Spitze der Pyramide gebraucht, um zu beschreiben, wo sich die Musik des Trios manifestiert. Ein Punkt, der ja nur existieren kann, da die Flanken, der gesamte Inhalt des Korpus auf ihn hinführt. Was letztendlich von diesem winzigen Punkt, dieser Spitze aus ertönt, ist Explosion des Darunterwohnenden: des inspirierten Augenblicks, der Biographien, der gesellschaftlichen Voraussetzungen und - ganz wesentlich - der Interaktion mit dem Publikum.
Der Zürcher Tenorsaxophonist und Klarinettist Michael Jaeger hat nach eigenem Bekunden die Faszination am Improvisieren schon im Jugendalter durch Charlie Parker und Dizzy Gillespie aufgesogen. Bassist Fabian Gisler lotet auf seinem Bass stetig neue Räume aus, etwa in der unorthodoxen Formation Rusconi. Tom Rainey schließlich ist am Ausgangspunkt des freien Jazzdenkens beheimatet, in New York, wo er vier Dekaden lang mit Kreativköpfen verschiedenster Lager wie Kenny Werner, Tim Berne und Fred Hersch gewirkt hat. Somit führen die drei Musiker auch ganz selbstverständlich die Geographien des Free Jazz zusammen, die am Anfang seiner Geschichte noch als getrennte Blöcke da standen. Im Spiel dieser drei wird freie Tonsprache auf anregende Weise neu belebt - als eine Innerlichkeit der Geistesblitze."
